National Statistics Day was celebrated for the 3rd time in the country today. Like the rest of the country, Kutubdia upazila also celebrated the day with the support of upazila administration and upazila statistics Kutubdia, Cox's Bazar. This year's theme of the day is “Development of Statistical System to Build Smart Bangladesh”. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) was established on August 26, 1974 by merging the then four statistical agencies under different ministries of the government as a result of the far-reaching thinking of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the great architect of independence, the father of the nation, with the aim of strengthening the data-based decision-making process of post-independence Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is playing an important role in planning, developing and monitoring the progress of the country by preparing accurate, timely and quality statistics. As the national statistics agency, the BBS produces and publishes official statistics. BBS conducts various surveys including population census, agricultural census, economic census in a fair and efficient manner. BBS has been regularly performing the responsibility of collecting, compiling, analyzing and publishing various data for the use of national and local planning planners, policy makers, public and private research institutes, various international development cooperation organizations, NGOs and the public.
Realizing the importance of statistics in the socio-economic development and planning of the country, Bangabandhu's daughter-in-law Prime Minister inaugurated a beautiful and spectacular statistics building on 2 acres of 14th century land in Agargaon, Dhaka on 25 October 1999. After that, he re-established the 'Statistics and Information Management Department' in 2012 with the aim of making the statistical system more integrated and mass-oriented, considering 'Statistics and Information Technology' as one of the strengths of Digital Bangladesh transformation.
In order to institutionalize the statistical system and establish its legal basis, on 27 February 2013, the 'Statistics Act 2013' was passed by the National Parliament. The National Strategy Paper for Statistical Development (NSDS) was approved in 2013 to formulate short, medium and long term plans for the overall development of the country's statistical system. NSDS is a detailed, realistic, participatory, flexible and state-owned planning document for holistic development of statistical systems.
Bangladesh today is the wonder of the world in terms of achievements in various fields. It's not just words; Today we are achieving development indicators in the light of reliable statistical data. Bangladesh has shown commendable success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Bangladesh is said to be a role model for MDG implementation. Keeping this reputation intact, the government is making relentless efforts to take the country further by achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the future.
Data is the most important factor in SDG monitoring. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics is working under the leadership of Department of Statistics and Information Management to prepare updated and disaggregated data. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics will provide data for 105 out of 231 indicators of SDG and Statistics and Information Management Department will provide data for 4 indicators. That is, the Department of Statistics and Information Management and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics will provide data for a total of 109 indicators out of 231 indicators.
In the current context, the United Nations declared 'World Statistics Day' is being celebrated with the aim of development and progress by ensuring the exchange of quality information with the outside world. The passing of the Statistics Act put the BBS on a firmer footing as the National Statistical Organization (NSO). In order to produce accurate and timely statistics, it is necessary to encourage people to provide accurate information. So a National Statistics Day is very much needed to make statistics more public oriented and at people's doorsteps.
Realizing the importance of the matter, with the aim of celebrating 27th February every year as National Statistics Day, a proposal was presented to celebrate National Statistics Day on 27th February every year with the usual permission in the Cabinet meeting held at the Cabinet Room of Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan on Monday, June 8, 2020 at 12 noon. In that meeting held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, a decision was taken to declare February 27 as National Statistics Day every year. For this, I have deep respect and gratitude to the honorable Prime Minister.
It should be noted that on March 4, 2018, a 50-member National Data Coordinating Committee headed by the Secretary, Statistics and Information Management Department was established with the approval of the Honorable Prime Minister to facilitate effective coordination between all data-providing ministries-departments-organizations, including BBS, in the provision of statistics at the national and international levels. Coordination Committee - NDCC) has been formed. It was gazetted on 5 April 2018. This committee is working with the aim of coordinating the updated information with the organization providing the information in order to obtain various information and data including SDG.
It is to be noted that BBS has gained the trust and appreciation of all concerned in the preparation of accurate and timely statistics in the national and international arena and has been established as the focal point for the preparation of official statistics of the country. Let the dreams of the future begin with the desire to practice correct statistics.
